Jet fuel and Green Chemistry

Algenol’s primary product is ethanol. 

We are leveraging our DIRECT TO ETHANOL^® technology platform and broad technical capabilities to expand Algenol’s product portfolio. 

Ethanol as a final product can be converted into jet fuel, diesel and plastics monomers by existing processes.  In the past, the feedstocks have been high cost ethanol or petroleum based, but with Algenol’s algae ethanol as the feedstock, these older processes take a new and exciting direction for Algenol to expand its product portfolio while sticking to its primary product ethanol.

In future development and deployments, Algenol’s algae can also make a number of valuable industrial chemicals with 3-6 carbon atoms. Of particular interest are those traditionally derived from fossil based propylene. But now many of these chemicals could be green when made directly and with algae. 

Low cost, renewable ethanol from the DIRECT TO ETHANOL^® process is the ideal raw material for producing renewable jet and diesel fuels.  The cost of carbon dioxide feedstock used in the DIRECT TO ETHANOL^® process will be much lower and more stable than costs for grain and sugars used in other biofuels processes.  With its partners, Algenol is developing low-cost means to convert ethanol to jet and diesel fuels
