Algenol Biofuels

Our Facilities

With offices and research and development facilities in the United States and Europe, Algenol’s operations, like its project development activities, have a global reach.

United States

Algenol’s research and development complex, built with assistance from Lee County, Florida, contains 40,000 square feet of world-class molecular biology, culture collection, physiology, aquaculture, analytical chemistry and engineering laboratories in Fort Myers, Florida. The complex also contains our Process Development Unit (PDU), which itself consists of a 9,500-square foot aquaculture laboratory, two large inoculation greenhouses and 3 acres of outdoor research area.

In October 2011, we broke ground on the Department of Energy-sponsored Pilot-scale Integrated Biorefinery in Fort Myers on 36 acres adjacent to the PDU. The Integrated Biorefinery will have the capacity to produce 100,000 gallons of ethanol per year and will contain 3,000 photobioreactors on 17 “wetted” acres, along with supporting processes and infrastructure collectively providing a microcosm of a commercial facility. Upon completion of the project in 2012, Algenol will have the only facility in the world where an algae strain will be able to go from lab-scale development to commercial-scale production on one site.

Algenol’s corporate headquarters are located in Bonita Springs, Florida, only 15 minutes from the research facility.

Europe

Through our subsidiary, Cyano Biofuels GmbH, we also have an international team of 50 highly qualified researchers working in our molecular biology laboratory in Berlin, Germany. Founded in Berlin in 2007, Cyano Biofuels was primarily focused on algal biology research and development and, in October 2010, became a wholly owned subsidiary of Algenol. Our operation in Berlin is well recognized within the European scientific community as an outstanding partner in various collaborative projects.

Algenol Biofuels Switzerland GmbH, another wholly owned subsidiary, manages our international operations. It is located in Zug, Switzerland and oversees all European research, development and finance activities, as well as international licensing and project development.
